How to clean a fuel tank without removing it?
Date: March 08, 2020 11:32AM
Drained most of the gas out of the '69 fuel tank today...I can still smell that old gas on me...lol
Anyway, I've got to figure out a way to get the remaining gas out. Once I do, what's the best way to clean the tank? I took a picture of the tank with some gas still in it. Doesn't look too bad. Thoughts?

If you're not going to take the tank out, you can do what I did which was to pour a zillion additives down it. The ones that claim to clean away deposits. Amsoil makes some good ones. Add those to the fresh gasoline that you do put in it and then just run it a couple of tanks full until everything is cleaned out. The car ran a lot better about a month after I bought it going that way.
Also, change the filter on your tank float, or get a whole new one. They sell online for 50 and below.

I would put it up on jack stands and remove it. Old gas, water and crud may be inside that may come loose later. Not a good situation later. Just need to remove sway bar links and rotate bar down. Then get straps off. New hoses at filler and vent to replace old possibly rotted ones.
Otherwise, put rags soaked with mineral spirits and wipe down the inside best you can. Many rags until it is clean, then a new filter in rear wheel well area to keep trash out of carbs.
But saying all that, if your fuel lines are all rusted, maybe it is time to renew the system by installing new parts and cleaning the tank properly.

Oh wait so that was a picture looking DOWN into the tank? How do you even see that without removing it?

Pulled out the float assembly from the side of the tank.

Haven't I read here that acetone dissolves rotten fuel deposits? Lately I've just been installing new tanks because they are cheap and clean.

Okay, looking through the float hole was what I thought that was a picture of. But somehow, I later got the impression that it was meant to be a vertical picture. Duh.
